- Born in Tynemouth, Ann Metcalf battled TB as a child, spending five years in hospital. After losing her parents in her teens, she went to live in Africa where she married. She lived there for twenty years however her husband's disappearance just before Zimbabwe's Independence caused her to leave, return to England and raise her two children alone. She studied for a Master's degree as a mature student. She now lives in London.
