- Book Synopsis
- The hidden history of modernism in the mountains In southern France, high above the villas and the pleasure palaces of the Côte d'Azur, there is the Alpine Extension of the Maginot Line. These little-known fortifications were built before the Second World War to protect France from Mussolini. But nobody has successfully invaded over the Alps since Napoleon, and things didn't quite turn out as the French expected… Now, the bunkers are marooned, forlorn and crumbling, in some of the most beautiful and remote parts of France. They are disappearing into the landscapes they once commanded, stray facts from a future passed, still waiting for an onslaught that never came. Join writer Max Leonard and photographer Camille McMillan as they uncover and document these hidden sites… New, expanded edition with additional photography 120pp with a 24pp insert on grey paper stock 75 full colour photographs and 30 one-colour photos by Camille McMillan, plus maps and diagrams Essay by Max Leonard 227 x 170mm, portrait Softcover with flaps
- About The Author
- Max Leonard is a writer whose most recent book is Mountain Style: British Outdoor Clothing 1953-2000. His A Cold Spell: A Human History of Ice is now in paperback from Bloomsbury. Michael Palin called it "bracingly original", while Olivia Laing said it was a "book of limitless fascinations". Previously he co-authored the Rio Tape/Slide Archive, about Hackney in the 1980s, and wrote Higher Calling, about shepherds, snowploughs and cyclists' obsession with mountains. Bunker Research is also available. It won a prize for Isola Press, where he is creative director. Other Isola books include the Rough-Stuff Fellowship Archive. Then there's Lanterne Rouge published by Yellow Jersey and a few more besides. He is the ghostwriter behind two Sunday Times Bestsellers and a rock musician memoir. Not forgetting smaller things for a legendary racing driver, famous spy-film makers, a Swiss banker and others. He writes good copy and has contributed to books made by Taschen, Rizzoli, Lonely Planet and Magma.
