- Book Synopsis
- A small factory on Roa Island provided work for many of the islanders, and the island's future prosperity depended on its success. Originally set up as a private venture by Capt RN (Rtd) William Isherwood, the factory was sold to Ferranti on his retirement. The future looked settled until the workforce was taken by surprise when the business was sold to Black, Black & Blackmore's, a company that no one had ever heard of. Work was not the only thing changing on the island. Eight single young women, some of whom worked in the factory, were all in pursuit of romance and their story presents an interesting alternative to industrial matters. Nevertheless, work is never far away. A Workington firm linked to the factory on Roa serves to introduce another northern community, many of whom struggle to navigate through life without creating drama involving both love and lust. Life, however, goes on, and in one way or another, they survive. When Black, Black & Blackemore's took over the factory on Roa, it sent a representative to visit the place, which is what the workforce expected. What was not expected was the astonishing way he arrived, and it started a year of mystery and disbelief. The mysterious world of Black, Black & Blackmore gradually unravelled as time went by, which should have been reassuring. There is a saying that 'seeing is believing', but is it always true?
- About The Author
- Tony Smith is a retired old fart living in a former coal mining and cotton mill town in the North-West of England. He watches and dwells on the town's struggle to retain some of its former industrial glory and its slow but steady decline. Gone is the local council and with it, the town hall. The local fire station is gone and the police station is no longer user friendly. Gone are the banks and the only way of getting cash is via two or three cash machines shared by the whole town's population. Supermarkets have dealt a death blow to a whole collection of high street shops which are now either boarded up or have become 'nail parlours', 'take-aways' or 'booze bars'. Everything is online and people serving people is becoming rare. It's called progress but Tony finds it utterly baffling. He finds many things baffling these days and writing has become his chosen form of escapism. He is even baffled by his own inclination to write stuff. While he does enjoy it when he is doing it, his novels are not catching on and Tony has now come to accept that any thoughts he might have nurtured in terms of making his first million reside in the rubbish basket. He has no idea why he is still writing. Maybe he is simply clinging on to what he used to like about life, at least it keeps him going. Tony is persistent and he is giving it another go and hopes you will too. His latest tome called Living under a Cloud is his fifth novel and it embraces two northern communities during the period 1958 to 1970. In the book, Tony uses some of the ideas that he featured in another series of books that he had published around 2013/15, which he hopes will provide the reader with something different to digest. Tony makes no excuses for his imagination which features strongly in this latest attempt of his to write something that is both enjoyable and, hopefully, thought provoking. If this novel fails, Tony is going back to knitting (come to think about it, he can't knit)! TONY SMITH
