- Book Synopsis
- 'One of the most moving, revolutionary artworks of the twentieth century.' - Michael Cunningham, author of The Hours. Set in London during the aftermath of the First World War, the elegant Clarissa Dalloway is putting the finishing touches on her house as she prepares to host a high-society party. Meanwhile, Septimus Smith struggles with the after-effects of shell-shock. At first glance, the two could not appear to be any more different - Dalloway is a middle-aged woman at home in the high-flying lifestyle of the prosperous upper classes, while Smith is poor, young and traumatised. And yet the two narratives brilliantly interweave to tell a haunting tale of life in interwar London. This elegant pocket-sized gift edition has real collector's appeal; featuring the classic; unabridged text; a facsimile of Woolf's signature on the title page; gold gilded page edges and beautifully designed endpapers. Part of the Arcturus Ornate Classics series this book makes wonderful gift for any lover of classic literature. ABOUT THE SERIES: Arcturus Ornate Classics are beautiful pocket editions of iconic literary works from across history. - About The Author
- Virginia Woolf, who was to become a major figure in the Bloomsbury Group of intellectuals, was born into an intellectual family in 1882. Her mother died when she was 13 and the death of her half-sister Stella two years later led to her first nervous breakdown. Woolf suffered from fragile mental health all her life and on 28 March 1941, after filling the pockets of her overcoat with stones, she walked into the River Ouse near her home and drowned herself.
