- About The Author
- Siddhartha Gautama (fl. 6th century BCE), better known as the Buddha, was an ancient Indian religious leader who established the religion of Buddhism. Friedrich Max Müller (1823-1900) was born in Germany. In 1846, he moved to England, and from 1850 he taught modern languages at the University of Oxford. His particular focus was ancient India, including the Sanskrit language, religions, customs and mythologies. He was one of the pioneers of Indian studies in the west, and he edited a 50-volume set of English translations, The Sacred Books of the East (1879-1910). For these, Müller engaged a range of experts to provide translations for many of the most important sacred works of Asia, including the Bhagavad Gita, the I Ching and The Dhammapada.
